CROSSGATES RIVER OAKS HOSPITAL OPENS STATE’S ONLY BURN CENTER

Brandon, MS –Fred Mullins, M.D., President of the Joseph M. Still Burn Centers, Inc. and Reed Hammond, Associate Administrator of Crossgates River Oaks Hospital, announced the opening of the state’s only burn center today at a news conference held at Crossgates River Oaks Hospital.

The Burn Center at Crossgates River Oaks Hospital is affiliated with the Joseph M. Still Burn Center located in Augusta, Georgia.  The center will provide both inpatient and outpatient care for burn victims across Mississippi and the surrounding states.  Initial treatment of burns and follow-up care, including dressing changes, skin debridement and skin grafts, will be the main focus at this facility as well as burn reconstruction.

In March 2008, Crossgates River Oaks Hospital opened the state’s only outpatient burn clinic. At the time the clinic provided follow-up treatment for burn patients twice a month. Crossgates River Oaks Hospital’s burn clinic now averages 30-35 patients per day. With the new center expanding its services to both inpatient care and outpatient care 5 days a week, the patient care numbers are expected to triple.

“It was a dream to be able to bring healing and hope closer to home for patients who suffer from serious burns,” said Dr. Mullins. “Last March that dream became a reality. Thanks to the support of this hospital’s leadership and the work of the Mississippi Firefighters Memorial Burn Association, Inc., we have reached our goal of opening an inpatient burn facility that has a strong foundation.”

When asked about the importance of the center, Amanda Fontaine, Executive Director of the Mississippi Firefighters Memorial Burn Association, Inc., said, “As firefighters put their lives on the line, it is reassuring to know that we have quality burn care available in our state, not only for themselves, but for citizens they work so hard to save.  Family members of burn patients will no longer have to travel out of state to support their loved ones recovering from injuries.”

Speaking on behalf of Crossgates River Oaks Hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Allen Tyra, Associate Administrator Reed Hammond joined Dr. Mullins in introducing Dr. William Lineaweaver, a board certified plastic surgeon on staff at Crossgates, as the medical director for the new burn center.  “Dr. Lineaweaver has provided outstanding patient care and leadership since the burn clinic opened over a year ago.  He has great vision for the burn center, as well as a strong commitment to quality care and optimal healing for our patients.  We are very pleased to have him in this leadership role,” said Hammond in making the announcement.

The Joseph M. Still Burn Center was founded in Augusta, Georgia, in 1978. It was originally founded by a burn patient that entered into the emergency room and was not able to be transferred to another facility. Dr. Joseph M. Still realized the void of burn care in the southeast, and the Joseph M. Still Burn Center was created.  Forty patients were treated within the first year.

Last year the Joseph M. Still Burn Centers, Inc., treated over 2,500 patients and had over 21,000 outpatient visits at clinics in Augusta, Georgia; Charleston, South Carolina; Atlanta, Georgia; and Brandon, Mississippi. The Joseph M. Still Burn Center is the largest burn care facility in the United States and the third largest in the world.
The Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Crossgates River Oaks Hospital will officially open on July 6, 2009.  A ribbon cutting ceremony and reception for the newly expanded facility will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 10.  The public is extended an open invitation to attend the celebration.
